Kapoor, Ph.D.Dr. Kapoor, the Grayce Wicall Gauthier Chair in mechanical science and engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), is being recognized for more than 30 years of pioneering contri butions to manufacturing engineering through basic and applied research with close collaboration with industrial users, the education and mentoring of young engineers, and lifelong service to ASME and other professional societies.Before assuming his current position at UIUC, Kapoor served as director of the College of Engineerings manufacturing engineering education program from 1989 to 2010 and director of the universitys Manufacturing Research Center from 1995 to 2012. Since joining the UIUC faculty in 1979, he has maintained an active research and graduate education program in the areas of modeling of manufacturing systems and quality engineering. From 1993 to 2003, Kapoor also served as director of the National Science Foundations (NSF) Industry/University Cooperative Research Center for Machine Tool Systems Research, focused on agile/flexible machining and machine-tool systems, machine tool system planning and control, and machining process development and innovat ion - research that has resulted in significant advances in mechanistic machining process models. Kapoor, an ASME Fellow, has published more than 350 journal and conference papers, and has authored or co-authored numerous book chapters. In 2008, Kapoor joined ASMEs Technical Committee on Publications and Communications, and has served as chair since 2011. Previously, he had served as chair of the Manufacturing Engineering Division (MED), member-at-large on the Manufacturing Operating Board and vice president for the manufacturing technical group on ASMEs Council on Engineering. In addition to receiving the MEDs Outstanding Service Award in 1998, Kapoor received the ASMEs Blackall Machine Tool and Gage Award in 1992, 1997 and 2008 the Dedicated Service Award in 1999 and the William T. Ennor Manufacturing Technology Award in 2003. The fate of winter is in the little paws of this American icon. And he's a rodent. It was 1887 when Clymer H. Freas, a newspaper editor, first declared Punxsutawney Phil to be the nation's foremost weather-predicting groundhog. Since then, Groundhog Day has developed into a widely-recognized tradition in the United States and Canada. Though the tradition has roots that reach back centuries into history, and there are many cities that boast a weather-predicting woodchuck, the small town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania has become the mecca for fans of the late-winter holiday. That's right. Not only do people tune in online and on TV to see what Phil has to say, but each year thousands also travel to Punxsutawney to witness the spectacle and Groundhog day activities in person. For those who do, Punxsutawney doesn't disappoint. Like most great festivals, it takes more than the star of the show to make it all come together. Here are just a few of the jobs that help bring the magic of the Groundhog Day celebration in Punxsutawney, PA to life each Feb. 2. Executive Director of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club If there is a cornerstone piece to the whole puzzle of a Groundhog Day celebration, this person is it. The executive director of the PGC has the responsibility of bringing all the parts of the celebration together and then making sure it all runs smoothly. The position, currently held by Katie Donald, has to plan the events and Groundhog Day activities that happen as part of the official prognostication at Gobbler's Knob, but that's just the start. She also must think about the logistics outside of the actual event buses to handle tourists, safety plans, PR, marketing, vendors, social media, handling the official website, and more. Think of Katie's position as the choreographer of this holiday dance; she's the one who keeps everyone in step so that the finished product looks effortless. The Inner Circle If you've ever watched the Groundhog Day activities at Gobbler's Knob on television, you've probably seen them. They stand out. The Inner Circle are the guys in the elegant suits and top hats. But who are they really? The Inner Circle is a group of local dignitaries dedicated to the legend of Punxsutawney Phil. They help to bring the Groundhog Day celebration together and act as the public faces of the event. Made up entirely of volunteers, this group fully embraces the legend and the fun of the holiday. The president of the Inner Circle is the person who actually listens to Phil's prediction, spoken in the ancient language of Groundhogese. This job may sound fun, but it also comes with risk. There have been several cases, in other locations, in which weather-predicting groundhogs have taken a not-so-friendly nibble of the listener's ear. Punxsutawney Phil's Handlers Though Punxsutawney Phil only has to work one day each year for the Groundhog Day activities, he still requires year-round care. Two members of the Inner Circle are designated as Phil's handlers, which means the task of caring for the oh-so-important groundhog is up to them. This may be trickier than you'd think because Punxsutawney Phil is not your everyday woodchuck he's a serious superstar who is roughly 130 years old. Considering that the average lifespan of a groundhog is only six to eight years, this is a very delicate assignment. Not only do the handlers need to keep Phil comfortable and happy all year long, but each September they also need to give him a sip of the magic elixir that keeps his longevity going. (Before you ask, no, it doesn't work on humans. It's reported to have the opposite effect, sadly.) Phil's year-round residence is at the public library. Executive director Katie Donald says that there is a viewing window from outside and one from inside the library as well. The viewing window inside the library is in the Children's Section. The children's librarian says that Phil often will sit by the window and listen to stories while she reads them to the kids. The Mayor of Punxsutawney In some cities that have their own Groundhog Day celebrations, it's the mayor of the city who puts an ear dangerously close to the animal. But because the Inner Circle handles those kinds of official duties, that is not the case at Gobbler's Knob. So what's left for the mayor? Well, he gets to conduct the weddings that inevitably occur in Barclay Square each year during the festival. Believe it or not, each year there are several (if not dozens) of weddings for the mayor to conduct. To date, no groom has seen his shadow and ducked away for six weeks before taking the plunge. Punxsutawney Borough and Township Employees Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania is a town of approximately 6,000 residents. Each year on Feb. 2, tens of thousands of people flood to Gobbler's Knob to see Phil and the announcement. That's a big influx of people for a small town to handle. That means that public employees such as local police, medical personnel, EMS, and public transportation workers are essential to the festival's success. While they do not work for the festival directly, they keep those thousands of visitors moving, safe, and happy during their visit. Vendors What fun would a Groundhog Day celebration be without a funnel cake, hot cocoa, or a wide variety of local crafts to peruse? Each year vendors flock to Punxsutawney to sell their wares to the influx of visitors, and without them, the local stores and restaurants would have difficulty serving such a large crowd. From burgers and pizza to fun and flavorful oddities, vendors help create the festival atmosphere while also taking pressure off the locally-established businesses. Whether you want winter to last just a little longer or you'd rather see it replaced by spring's greenery, a trip to Punxsutawney for Groundhog Day could be a lot of fun. Science fiction enthusiasts see them as the inevitable blending of man and machine, hoping that once the technology is perfected, well all be flying around like Iron Man. While that may be a bit optimistic, applications of exoskeleton technology are already making their way into the industrial, medical, military, emergency response, applications. Exoskeletons are officially defined as wearable devices that augment, enable or enhance motion, posture or physical activity, according to the ASTM International committee developing exoskeleton standards. But Bill Billotte, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) physical scientist who serves as vice-chairman of ASTM Technical Committee F48, gets excited when he thinks about these mechanical extensions of the human body. Just ask Ben Wolff, the chairman and chief executive officer of Sarcos Robotics, a Salt Lake City, Utah, company, where the Guardian XO Max exoskeleton has been in development for nearly 20 years. Image: NIST When we started out to create a full-body, powered industrial exoskeleton robotic system, the challenges were so daunting that we wondered if the effort would yield a commercially viable product with real applications or just a scientific novelty, Wolff said. It took almost two decades of innovative RD to achieve what no other robotics company in the world has done: power a human-scale robot doing meaningful work for up to eight hours on a single charge. When Wolff and his team started work on the Guardian XO in 2000, they decided to focus on a design that would enhance the whole body, allowing a person to lift up to 200 pounds for eight hours without fatigue. We wanted a suit that would duplicate how human joints and muscles operate but with superhuman capabilities, he said. The perfect synergistic relationship between human and machine. The current model, slated for final testing this year and commercialization in 2020, consists of highly dexterous, computer-controlled and electronically actuated arms mounted on a track (wheeled) base. The user can get in and out of the Guardian XO in less than a minute. A suite of sensors is integrated into the hardware so that the armor responds intuitively to a persons instincts and reflexes. Most importantly, the entire weight of the suit, as well as that for any payload, is transferred through the exoskeletons structure and wheels into the ground. The biggest challenge for Wolff and the Sarcos engineers was power consumption. Our first exoskeleton model required 6,800 watts and the batteries drained fairly rapidly, Wolff explained. Thanks to technological advancements in instrumentation and power components, someone wearing our current suit can carry 150 pounds at 3 miles per hour for an entire day on less than 500 watts. Power wasnt a concern when Joseph Zawaideh and Mark Doyle co-founded Levitate Technologies in 2013 in San Diego to develop and fabricate a passive exoskeleton device designed to augment extremities rather than the entire body. We felt that wearable robotics might be a great solution, so we set out to design a system that would be comfortable, cool, smooth operating with little or no friction, and allow precision movement at all times. The device is custom fitted so that it integrates seamlessly with a persons unique body type and size. Best of all, Zwaideh said, Airframe requires no batteries, no software, not even any lubricant. It doesnt make you stronger like other exoskeletons. It takes the edge off by transferring the weight of your arms from the shoulders, neck and upper back to the bodys core, Zawaideh said. It engages a pulley when your arm is raised and gradually releases as its lowered, resulting in just the right level of support to reduce tension and avoid fatigue. Zawaideh said what has surprised him and his colleagues most is how well their device performs its mission. We expected to see relief to the lower back and shoulder but found that the Airframe lowers exertion levels by as much as 80 percent, he said. Considering there are more than 650,000 cases of work-related musculoskeletal disorders annually resulting in $50 billion in lost productivitythats $1 out of every $3 spent on workers compensationits easy to see what this could mean to a lot of industries. Companies are definitely buying into wearable robotics. Sarcos investors include Caterpillar, GE Ventures, Microsoft and Schlumberger. Levitates Airframe is already on the job at BMW, Boeing, John Deere and Toyota. Both firms are actively involved in the effort to standardize exoskeleton performance and safety, working with standards development organizations such as ASTM and federal agencies like NIST. If we get the metrics right, the whole exoskeleton industry, and more importantly, the end users, will benefit, Wolff said. What makes it all worthwhile to Zawaidehand a sentiment echoed by Wolff and others who have helped move exoskeletons from science fiction to commercial realityis how the technology improves the quality of life for the humans who wear them. Acceptance Into Army OCS Acceptance Into Army OCS Army Officer Candidate School (OCS) is a 12-week program which graduates commissioned officers in the United States Army. Beginning in World War II, Army OCS was established to provide infantry officers for the war effort. OCS has remained an important commissioning source for the Army, along with Army ROTC and the U.S. Military Academy. OCS is located at Fort Benning, Georgia. Categories of Officer Candidates Basically, there are three categories of officer candidates: College graduates (civilians), current military (enlisted) and direct commission (doctors, lawyers, chaplains, etc.) All OCS graduates must serve a minimum of three years on active duty. Only about 60 percent of all those who apply are accepted for attendance at OCS. Civilian college graduate and current military candidates do not compete with each other for available OCS slots. College graduate applicants are chosen by a selection board convened by the Army Recruiting Command, and current military personnel are selected by a board convened by the Army Personnel Command (PERSCOM). Once selected, the graduation rate for OCS is over 90 percent. Civilian College Graduate Officer Candidates To be eligible to enroll in OCS as a civilian college graduate youll need to be able to meet the normal requirements of enlistment. OCS applicants need a four-year degree from an accredited college or university and must be U.S. citizens. You also should be able to qualify for a secret security clearance from the Department of Defense (although may not need to actually obtain the clearance until after graduation). A minimum score of 110 on the general technical (GT) segment of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) tests also is required. Like any other Army recruit, you must meet height and weight requirements and will have to pass a physical at a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS). Application Process for Officer Candidate School The application process begins by talking to an Army Recruiter. In the Army, OCS candidates must enlist for the purpose of attending Army Basic Training. Once you pass the above criteria, and it has been reviewed for correctness by the Recruiting Battalion, you will be scheduled to appear before the Recruiting Battalion OCS Board. The board is composed of at least three commissioned officers. The board will question you on personal history, training, and experience. Each board member will make an independent appraisal of your overall qualification for a commission. If the board recommends rejection, you will be so informed. The processing ends at that point. If the board recommends acceptance, the results are sent to the Army Recruiting Command OCS Review Board, which does the final approval, and determines OCS class date. Once the review board approves the application, you will be enlisted in the Delayed Enlistment Program (DEP) and given a basic training class date. Current Military Applicants to Officer Candidate School These soldiers must have the same ASVAB score and citizenship status as civilian college graduate candidates. If youre an enlisted soldier and dont have a college degree, you may be required to take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American College Test (ACT). You should be on track to complete your bachelors degree within a year of enrolling in OCS. a 60 in each area). Youll also need a score of 80 or higher on the English Comprehension Level Test (ECLT) if your primary language is not English. And you should have no convictions by civil or military courts. Note: You cant apply for OCS until after youve completed advanced individual training (AIT). Active Military Who May Apply to Officer Candidate School Active Army warrant officers or enlisted members who have completed AIT and reported to their first permanent duty station may apply. Soldiers assigned to overseas commands may apply at any time. Former commissioned officers may apply if their only commissioned service was performed in one of the Armed Forces early commissioning programs for students in the health professions. Commissioned warrant officers, warrant officers and enlisted personnel of the USAR not on active duty may apply. Warrant officers and enlisted personnel of the Army National Guard of the United States (ARNGUS) may apply as prescribed by the Chief, National Guard Bureau. Application Process for Current Military For current military personnel, check with your chain of command about applying for OCS, because youll need their support. Your application form, along with supporting documentation (college transcripts, waiver requests, letters of recommendation) are sent to the unit commander who reviews and approves the application. The unit commander then passes the application package through the intermediate commander (for review/approval) to the Installation Commander. The Installation Commander convenes an OCS structured interview. This process is conducted by three commissioned officers who will evaluate the applicants performance and application materials, which includes a writing sample. If approved, the Installation Commander passes the application through the MACOM commander (who can also approve/disapprove), who forwards the package to Army PERSCOM (Personnel Command), where the package is reviewed by an OCS selection board, who makes the final selections. The PERSCOM board selects the branch at the same time the OCS package is approved. About Officer Candidate School All  Officer  candidates must complete Basic Combat Training before they enter  OCS,  where they will be focusing their education and training on small unit leadership and tactics. OCS is divided into two phases. The basics of being a commissioned officer are taught in the first phase of OCS. This will include training the officer candidate in leadership and accountability. Being an officer requires responsible and capable people working together as a team. This phase focuses on testing those abilities.     Phase two is the testing and evaluation phase, which requires the candidate to use all of the skills learned and put them to the test in the field. Officer candidates are tested leading a team during an intense 18-day training mission.   In general, the Army allows the movement of dependents at government expense if the length of training (at a single location) is greater than 180 days. Candidates will have limited access to family members for at least the first seven weeks or so of OCS. After that weekend passes are conditional until entering the senior phase when restrictions are relaxed a bit. After OCS, a newly commissioned officer will attend  Basic Officer Leader Course (BOLC).  This is a three-phase training program designed to provide initial military training for junior commissioned and warrant officers in both active and reserve components.

Now it is time to set your plan in motion and land a fresh job with a new set of challenges in the different series youve chosen. At The Resume Place, we refer to your discrete job duties and competencies as the hats you wear at work. Switching occupational series is analogous to changing the shirt on your back. We can help you ditch the old duds and move into some new threads. Recombining what you need A degree of overlap between your previous experience and the requirements of the job you seek will be necessary. In crafting your most  effective resume- your ticket to an interview- you must bring this overlap to the forefront while minimizing or outright eliminating content that does not overlap. This may sound trivial, but it is actually a difficult task for many series-switchers. Finding and articulating relevant overlap is not as easy as it may seem. Years of experience in a given federal occupational series can impart significant knowledge and skills, but it also can create process, procedural, and linguistic  blinders. You have likely grown accustomed to doing certain things a certain way and relating to them using certain words and phrases. No matter how current and complete your resume may be, series-specific words/phrases/structure have a tendency to ossify your apparent qualifications and make referrals to a different series  hard to achieve. Overlap between the job you ha ve and the job you want must be found and leveraged to the maximum extent. This will likely involve rethinking, rephrasing, and generalizing specificity and jargon. This can be very difficult, especially if it has been a while since you have thought outside your series box. But there is a finite space in your resume closet: the other difficult part of writing the most effective and  best read resume for a series switch is letting go of irrelevance. Most people are rightfully proud of their experience and its reflection in their resume. Experience takes years to develop, and documenting it all within a resume can be arduous. And with lengthiness accepted and even encouraged in federal resumes, it can be tremendously difficult to trim and feel unnecessary to leave out experience. You certainly need to impart experience and tenure. But irrelevance is irrelevance. The truly unnecessary should be trimmed as it hurts readability. It can be difficult to part with that hard-won experience on paper. Its like  the hesitation of donating your  favorite old sweater when you have set your sights on moving to the tropics. The old sweater is the unnecessary, dated  stuff in your resume  that doesnt apply to your future (tropical) job. Tailor your wardrobe, combining e xiting and new pieces, with an eye to where you are going- not from where you came. My Shirt-Changing Story I have a good example of a series change which is near and dear to me: my own. Newly married and facing a Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) situation complete with an entirely undesirable “relocation”, I made the leap in 2010 from a very narrow, technical, specialized occupational series (0855 Electronics Engineer) to a slightly more general acquisition/business series with its own unique requirements and qualifications. The locations and agencies I shopped suited me better than BRAC’s forced option. This involved much unraveling of old sweaters and sewing of new clothes. Previously, my resume prominently featured jargon-y technical experience that would have substantially limited me even in the 0855 series. But after the help offered through an  on-site Resume Place course, I filtered out and recombined my experience with an eye toward specific positions I had in mind. For example: These old wooly yarns: Served as section lead for contract actions and micropurchases involving in-service engineering support for Mk 45 Gun Weapons System. Maintained Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) configuration matrices for componentry included within the Mk 45 Gun Weapons System, Mk 119 Gun Computer System Cabinet and Mk 46 Optical Sight System. Contracting Officers Representative for gun computer system hardware contracts. Developed engineering diagrams and configuration lists to be published in engineering technical manuals. Were re-knitted into these snazzy Hawaiian shirts: ACQUISITION ANALYSIS AND PROCUREMENT: Procurement expert for code/branch with extensive knowledge of management processes, organizational structures, and funding guidelines. Knowledge of and adherence to the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR). Procurement experience with standalone contracts as well as larger, omnibus contract vehicles. Developed expertise in federal stock system, micropurchase, task order authorship, budgetary documentation, and financial functions. As technical representative on numerous contracts, monitored progress from requirements formulation through post-award. Compared and validated contractor performance and deliverables. TECHNICAL PROCUREMENT OVERSIGHT:  Planned and executed highly technical life-cycle and end-of-life technology procurements. Made critical acquisition decisions concerning technology obsolescence and Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS), end-of-life procurements. Helped implement new ideas, procedures, and processes for organizational-level program operations in ad hoc COTS working group. Managed contracts from requirements definition to post-award with special attention to technical specification as well as strategic budget planning. Prepared Statements of Work (SOWs) and evaluated contractor proposals. Nevertheless, if your previous job was focused on studying the maze of social-networking sites and figuring out how to use them best, you’d be way ahead of the game.At least, Randy Giusto hoped he would. Until April, the vice president and research director at market-research firm IDC was in charge of a group of 40 analysts. They brought in more than $15 million per year by creating reports that measured, and often changed the direction of, huge markets in consumer and digital media.The shock of his layoff left Giusto without an immediate plan. “Most jobs are gotten through networking - knowing people, talking to people, and a big percentage of that today is done through social networking as well as in person.”Like millions of other out-of-work executives, Giusto found it’s hard to separate online and offline networking in 2009.After all, we now rely on online job boards, social-networking sites and mobile devices to make connections. Knowing people, talking to people, and finding and capitalizing on job leads, now takes place largely online.Industry-specific and social-networking toolsGiusto started close to home. He signed up for groups on LinkedIn that focused on market research, consumer electronics, mobile and other technology areas in which he had some experience, and for groups formed by recruiters he’d worked with in the past.Members of the groups alerted him to a series of job openings that had either been posted only in inaccessible places or not at all - opportunities in the “background job market” that he would never have seen without a connection to specific parts of the industry, in which he’d worked for years.“Vertical-market groups and networks really have become one of the most effective, most reliable sources for that kind of job information,” according to Paul Gillin, author of “ The New Influencers ” and “Secrets of Social Media Marketing,” and tech-industry veteran/consultant who specializes in social-network marketing.“A lot of people think they don’t have the time or expertise to use industry-specific or at-large social-networking sites,” Gillen said. “But if you make yourself savvy, and it’s not hard, in how to use Plaxo and LinkedIn and Twitter and vertical networks, you can do a lot.” He focused his job search on one: Twitter.When he was at IDC, Giusto maintained a Twitter feed where IDC customers could follow his analysis of industry issues in the news. He realized he could leverage this and show his value to potential employers by compiling and analyzing information for his “followers.”“That kept me in contact with a lot of people who (had) sought me out. People (were) saying they didn’t have any openings right now, but offering or raising the possibility of some consulting work that might last through the summer, and (saying) we could talk more in the fall,” Giusto said. “Especially in July and August, when the number of job postings went way down, I built a network of people with different specialties I could turn to on a freelance basis to fulfill some of the more complicated engagements.”This “push” strategy on Twitter resulted in most of his job contacts coming to him, rather than vice versa. “Mostly they came through Twitter or they searched on LinkedIn for people with certain skills and found me that way,” he said.Start with a strategy, not a toolToo many job seekers approach their social networks the wrong way when they’re looking for a job, said Ellen Gordon Reeves, author of “Can I Wear My Nose Ring to the Interview” and consultant/career coach at the Columbia Publishing Course - a six-week, graduate-level training program on magazine and book publishing. Some just march right out and broadcast, “I need a job. Can anyone help?”“Desperation creates paralysis,† she said. “People get a whiff of desperation, and it turns them off, for one thing. When people feel out of control, they’ll say they’re happy to do anything. When you say that, there’s nothing in my brain (as a contact) that I can use to help you. I have all these networks and contacts and resources, but if I don’t have a clue what you’re looking for, I don’t know how to help you. When you approach people like that you’re asking the helper or potential employer to do the digging to figure out how to help you.”The best approach is the same direct-contact, web-of-trust method used in more traditional, in-person networking, Gillin said.“The most important thing is to have a strategy,” he said. “I’ll go to events that people go to with the express purpose of networking for jobs and they haven’t even thought about how I can help them. You can’t put the tool first; you have to know what you’re looking for and then use the tool - whether it’s Twitter o r LinkedIn or Plaxo or another service - to help you get there.”“You have to stop looking for a job, and start looking for a person,” Reeves agreed.“If you ask a roomful of people how they got their jobs, 80 percent will say it was through some kind of referral. So you have to stop sending your resume into the black hole of cyberspace, and use the tools to research and find the companies you’re interested in and the job you’re interested in and the person you should talk to about that job. Then you use social-networking tools to make that contact happen.”Examples of good strategies in actionThat backdoor approach works remarkably well, according to Aliza Freud, CEO of SheSpeaks.com, a word-of-mouth marketing startup that enrolls women in a cooperative effort to make their voices heard to developers of the products they use.Example 1: One candidate Freud recently hired got noticed by searching SheSpeaks.com to get familiar with the company’s approach, and also follow ing Freud’s own Twitter feed “to gain a better perspective on my thinking and hot buttons (as a potential employer),” Freud said. Example 2: Another researched the company and then used LinkedIn to find connections who could make the recommendations that helped make the candidate “stand out among hundreds of candidates” and eventually land the job, she said.Using video to put you in the spotlightWithout a direct link to a company - a contact who knows the hiring manager or can introduce you - it’s hard to get noticed.It is especially difficult in industries where there have been so many layoffs that there’s a crowd for every opportunity that crops up, said David Schmidt, a Michigan-based MktgLadder member and 20-year PR and marketing veteran who specializes in manufacturing technology and IT-related professional services.Not even professional associations are exempt from the glut. The Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), in which Schmidt has been active as a member and speaker, is so packed with job seekers that its job boards generate the same overwhelming flood of resumes as more general site s, he said.One way to get noticed is to use an innovative bit of technology or marketing, like a video resume. Schmidt, who lost his management job two months ago when his agency went out of business, recorded and posted a three-minute resume he believes can highlight his skills and experience, give an idea of what he’s like to work with, and maybe even attract attention a text resume wouldn’t. As an appendix to his video resume, he also produced a short tutorial on Web 2.0 practices, available on his YouTube account.“You’ve got to try anything you can to set yourself apart,” Schmidt said. “I’m only getting started with this and a couple of other approaches, but it’s a new way to get an edge and can impart more about my personality and some of my video and producing skills.”New technology strategies like Schmidt’s can produce results - or waste a lot of time - depending on the person producing and the picture that gets painted. It can be ineffective for people who are not making their message clear or presenting a consistent picture of themselves in all the social media they use, Gillin said.“What I tell people is to pick LinkedIn or Plaxo or whatever network you’re most comfortable in; get all your information up to date, and tell people clearly what you’re looking for. Then make that profile the one you update with new information,” Gillin said. “Take that information and syndicate it to the other networks you use - Twitter or Facebook or whatever - but use one as the base to work from. It saves a lot of energy and not only avoids having you look completely different on each network but confusing people.”Narrow your focus, and your sources“The general job boards are full of junk, so you have to find the ones that filter some of that out,” according to Schmidt, who uses MktgLadder and follows several Twitter feeds to find job leads.One problem is that Twitter - with its tweets and retweets and tweetups - is alien-soun ding and overwhelming to the uninitiated, said Rick Stomphorst, a director of operations and development at Econstruction.com who is highly rated by the LinkedIn community as an expert on the use of social networks.A huge number of new jobs are posted through Twitter, but the number of feeds is so enormous that it’s hard to find them, he said.One option is to identify a small number of companies you want to work with or recruiters who work in your industry, search for the Twitter feeds of executives from those companies, and follow them. You learn a lot about their priorities and methods, often hear about their job postings first, and get yourself instant credibility as a longtime follower of their tweets.Corporate social networksFinding job listings is one thing; finding them credible is another, said Kate Lukach, director of marketing for SelectMinds, which develops software that companies use to create their own social networks.SelectMinds has become one of the leading software providers for social networks owned and controlled by specific companies and organizations, like alumni associations and industry groups.When a company implements this “closed network” software, job seekers get a good source of job leads at a company where they’re already a known commodity, so it improves their chances of landing a job. And it drastically cuts the cost of recruiting, vetting and training new employees, Lukach said.Internal, corporate social networks compete with less controlled, sometimes less focused alumni networks or social networks such as LinkedIn, Ning.com and others. But they’re qualitatively different, Lukach said. Each user’s real name (not a made-up user name) and work history is accessible via hyperlink when they comment within the closed network. This all but guarantees members behave as if they’re in a company conference room, not on the wild Web, she said.Too many optionsUsing Twitter, LinkedIn, video, e-mail, IM and a host of tools, aggre gation sites and other information-gathering mechanisms can jump-start a job search, but each one also comes with a cost, according to Schmidt.Some of the new services and techniques are more effective than others. But it’s important to learn how to negotiate salary, anyway. If you never ask for a raise, you’re less likely to get paid fairly. Raises are not guaranteed. Some organizations are proactive with salary increases and review employee performance at regular six- or twelve-month intervals, adjusting compensation in conjunction with those appraisals. However, many organizations will only award increases if requested by an employee. How Often to Ask for a Raise In most cases, you shouldnt ask for a raise more than once a year. Of course, there are exceptions to this rule, like if your employer didn’t give you a raise six months ago but promised to revisit the issue in another four months based on performance goals or available funding. Another window of opportunity might be after a significant achievement, like landing a big client, orchestrating a successful event, securing a major grant, introducing a successful cost-cutting measure, or closing a big deal. In general, you should not ask for a raise until you have worked in a position for a full year. Be Prepared Before You Ask However long it takes, dont ask for an increase in compensation until you have lined up a compelling rationale for a raise.  Keep a daily or weekly journal of your accomplishments on the job so you have evidence to point to when making your request. Emphasize results with an impact on the bottom line, whether they led to increased sales, cost savings, quality improvements, or employee retention. Mention if you have added skills (through a class or training), taken on additional responsibilities, completed a project successfully, or surpassed the goals set at the start of the year. Keep in mind that simply handling the responsibilities detailed in your job description doesnt justify a raise. Managers look for employees going above and beyond the required levels of work and productivity. Document the things you have done that your manager values and thus make her look good as well. Before asking for a raise, research the average salary and average raises for your position in your location. Is your salary at the market rate? Lower? Higher? Use your research to bolster the amount youre asking for.   Time Your Request Timing matters when it comes to asking for a raise. Dont ask for one when your boss is having a bad day. And hold off making a request if the company isnt doing well. (If news breaks that a major deal fell through, for instance, ask to reschedule the meeting about your salary.) Consider, too, when raises are typically awarded. Then, aim to make your request a few months in advance. For instance, if your company awards promotions or cost-of-living raises at the end of the fiscal year in June, aim to make your case for a raise in April. That will give your manager time to consider your request and meet with others responsible for determining who gets a raise (and for how much). Dont Complain, Persuade! This isnt the time to whine about how much more everyone else is making more than you or how you take on twice as much work as they do. Even if its true, complaining rarely convinces bosses to loosen the purse-strings. Also, dont talk about how much your own expenses, like rent or loans, have gone up. Your financial situation is not your managers concern. Instead, base your argument on data. Talk about how your accomplishments have added to the organization’s bottom line and about the market rate for your role and skills. Is a Promotion a Possibility? Keep in mind that one of the best ways to enhance your pay is to secure a promotion.  If there is a suitable opening above your level or if you can justify reclassifying your job at a higher level, then ask management about the possibility of a promotion. Promotions are often accompanied by more significant raises that would normally be awarded as part of regular salary adjustments. Pay raises associated with promotions are often in the 10 to 15 percent range, while salary increases for performance are typically 1 to 5 percent.     How to Ask for a Raise As you can see, theres nothing spontaneous about asking for a raise. Youll want to be well prepared before requesting one. Best practices include: Preparing an agenda for the meeting and some salary scripts. Have an argument for why you deserve more and be prepared to discuss it. Dressing the part. Even if your office dress code is casual or non-existent, now is not the time to come to work in your beach attire. Dress professionally. After the meeting is over, your boss should be thinking about the case you’ve built, not what you were wearing during the conversation. Having a plan B. What will you do if your manager says no â€" and doesn’t offer hope of a raise in the near future? Quitting on the spot is seldom advisable, but you’ll feel more confident in the discussion if you have a back-up plan, e.g. pursuing leads at other companies. For one thing, you may feel more comfortable making your case in writing, and your manager may prefer having some time to review and consider your request.
